چکیده

Studies initially concerned with the role of nutrient carbohydrates in the formation of capsular hyaluronic acid by various strains of Streptococcus pyogenes led to the finding that the end products of glucose and galactose dissimilation in these organisms differ quantitatively (Steele et al., 1954). This paper is a report of further investigations on the latter aspect of the carbohydrate metabolism of Group A streptococci.

The effect of pH on the fermentation of glucose and galactose by Streptococcus pyogenes.

Comparative studies on the fermentation of glucose and galactose by Streptococcus pyogene strain S-23 have shown marked quantitative, but not qualitative, differences in the end products produced (Pierce and White, 1952; Steele et al., 1954). The organism readily converts about 90 per cent of the glucose utilized during growth to lactic acid. When galactose serves as the energy source, a much s...

Zinc disrupts central carbon metabolism and capsule biosynthesis in Streptococcus pyogenes

Neutrophils release free zinc to eliminate the phagocytosed bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus; GAS). In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underpinning zinc toxicity towards this human pathogen, responsible for diseases ranging from pharyngitis and impetigo, to severe invasive infections. Using the globally-disseminated M1T1 GAS strain, we demonstrate that...

Arginine and glucose metabolism in a strain of Streptococcus pyogenes.

McIlwain (Biochem J. (London), 40, 67, 1946) reported that glutamine, arginine, and urea stimulate glycolysis in resting cells of the hemolytic streptococcus. We have observed an analogous phenomenon in cell-free preparations of a single strain of Streptococcus pyogenes (S23). Our cell-free extracts were prepared by grinding the washed cells from 1,600 ml of an 18 hour broth culture of a nonmuc...

A novel adaptation of aldolase regulates virulence in Streptococcus pyogenes.

Regulation of virulence factor expression is critical for pathogenic microorganisms that must sense and adapt to a dynamic host environment; yet, the signal transduction pathways that enable this process are generally poorly understood. Here, we identify LacD.1 as a global regulator of virulence factor expression in the versatile human pathogen, Streptococcus pyogenes. LacD.1 is derived from a ...

Expression of Recombinant Streptokinase from Streptococcus Pyogenes and Its Reaction with Infected Human and Murine Sera

Objective(s): Streptokinase (SKa) is an antigenic protein which is secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes. Streptokinase induces inflammation by complement activation, which may play a role in post infectious diseases. In the present study, recombinant streptokinase from S. pyogenes was produced and showed that recombinant SKa protein was recognized by infected human sera using Western blot analy...
